Back in the days of Black Condor, I lived in NJ and I would often take the bus into NYC to drop off pages to my editor.
I used to walk with my head down too.
One day while on my way to the offices, and watching feet walk past mine, I noticed a bright pair of orange Chucks which I thought were cool as hell. I glanced up the khaki pants, Hawaiian shirt, and noticed it was Keith Giffen, portfolio in hand, obviously making his way to our mutual destination.
I needed to introduce myself!
I was giddy, and started to make a beeline toward him as he rounded a corner and then, POOF! he evaporated like mist!
I couldn’t believe it. The last thing I remember was him glancing peripherally in my direction as I tried to catch up.
Of course while at the DC offices, I saw him as we passed in the hallway. He comfortably ignored me as he was in conversation with his editor. Not wanting to impose, I never said hello.
Over time, we did eventually meet. He was the curmudgeon everybody says he was, but he was tolerantly awesome as I introduced him to some dear friends of mine from art school who were big fans. I tried to coax him into having dinner with us, but he declined.
Years later he had me partner with him on a Batman/Joker story that was part of a Halloween compilation DC put together a couple of years ago. He was great, and very excited about the story he wrote.
I tried to email him from time to time, but there never seemed to be enough time for him to respond.
I wish I got to know him better. He was brilliant and I so wanted him to know how much I loved his work.
Like that opportunity, he too will be missed.
RIP Keith. My deepest condolences to his family.
